Description

A fine Late 19th century Qing Dynasty Chinese Canton export sewing box of octagonal form standing on gilded stylised animal feet in superb original condition.

The box is made of lacquered wood decorated in two tones of gold on a black background with vignettes depicting garden scenes populated with people in traditional costume and small buildings and walls. Each scene is surrounded by stylised flowers.

The lid opens to reveal many of its original bone fittings of fretwork, thread holders, clamp, winders and many other sewing accessories.

The top compartment lifts out. The lower drawer has a hinged lid painted with another garden scene and a number of open compartments for storing accessories.

Condition: This is the finest box of this type that we have come across. The decoration on the lid is still bright and clear and only slightly rubbed, and there is no damage to the lacquer.
