Description

A detailed 19th century Chinese wood carving of a richly robed figure playing a pipa (lute) while seated on a rock surrounded by swirling water. The figure is probably one of the Four Heavenly Kings, Buddhist Gods borrowed from Indian mythology, each of whom watches over one cardinal direction of the world. Chíguó tiānwáng (also known as Dhriarastra) carries a pipa to indicate his desire to use music to convert sentient beings to Buddhism. He is the God of Music as well as being the guardian of the East.

Dimensions: Width 13.5 x Depth 11 x Height 16.5 cm

Weight 402 g

Condition: The carving is in good antique condition with an attractive colour and patina. There is some minor chipping to the figure's extremities, the most obvious being the headdress.
