Description

Profusely carved late 19th century Chinese hardwood travelling desk which has been painted white in 20th century. The rectangular top has a central plain oval bordered by a narrow band of Greek key design surrounded by a flame like pattern which together probably represent the flaming pearl in Chinese mythology, with dragons occupying the four corners. The carving continues onto the frieze which bears a single drawer at the front and onto the pierced panels to the sides and back. The large dragon on the back panel is particularly impressive, the composition including stylised bats and flowers within a border of Chinese symbols.

The paint has been cut back on the raised parts of the carving in our workshop to reveal the pale coloured hardwood below and to enhance its distressed appearance. This small desk with its back facing out would make a spectacular lamp table in a white themed or shabby chic interior where some more decorative elements are desired.

(2 ft 6 inch x 1 ft 10 inch x 2 ft 2 1/2 inch)

Condition: The table is in good antique condition with all the carving intact. It has been thoroughly cleaned and all surfaces sanded back to reveal the underlying wood on the raised parts of the carving such as the bodies of the dragons. There are some minor splits on the top at the edges and one corner is chipped but none give cause for concern.
