Description

This is a fine unframed original Robert Tavener RE (1920-2004) signed ink and watercolour painting of St Mary the Virgin Church in Willingdon, near Eastbourne. It is a Norman church with its origins around 1100AD.

The watercolour is signed bottom right and though it lacks a title its identification has been confirmed by the resident priest.

Better known for his linocuts, Taverner also produced many watercolours with the South Downs landscape and historic buildings within a short drive of his home in Eastbourne providing the greatest inspiration and subject matter. Tavener's home was in an old coach house at the foot of the South Downs, and this church at Willingdon would have provided one of the closest locations for his art.

Biography
Robert Tavener, illustrator and printmaker, was born in London. After 6 years war service he attended Hornsey College of Art (1946-1950). He was head of Printmaking at Eastbourne College of Art and Design from 1953, later to become vice principal until he retired in 1980. He also taught at St Martins School of Art for one day a week. He did much illustration work as well as commissions for organisations such as Shell, the BBC, and London Transport. He was a senior fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers. His work is held in over 25 public collections including the V&A and the Government Art Collection, as well as the Towner gallery in Eastbourne.
