Description

This is a superb Chinese carved teak chest with camphor wood lining standing on bracket feet, circa 1930s. The quality and intricacy of the carving on the top and front panels puts this chest above any others we have come across. The top depicts a landscape with figures, temples, trees, rocks and a bridge over a river. Two fire-spewing dragons twisting among clouds and confronting a flaming pearl adorn the frieze on the front while the main panel is dominated by junks in full sail with river banks rich in trees, pagodas and temples. It really is a tour de force of carving in teak.

The top opens with two cup handles created by the arching of the dragon bodies to reveal a beautifully figured camphor wood lined interior. The lid is held upright on a metal stay.

Condition: This chest is in fine antique condition having been cleaned and waxed in our workshop. Unlike many Chinese carved chests this is not covered in a thick French Polish but has a more subtle lustrous waxed finish. Part of the brass latch is missing, a common phenomenon with these chests but not an issue as the heavy lid should be lifted using the cup handles formed by the dragons' bodies. Additional photographs are available on request.

Delivery: This chest can be delivered by our trusted delivery man to most places in England and Wales for £60. Please contact us to confirm the delivery cost.
