Description

This is a small Anglo-Indian hardwood Sutherland table with an octagonal top on barley twist legs, circa 1890. Though beautifully constructed by Indian craftsmen who were following an English design but with their own 'twist', what really makes this table so unique is that we have a copy of a photograph of this very same table circa 1900 shortly after it was made, taken in the home of a member of the British Raj in India. There it is in the foreground of the interior shot of a spacious living room. It must be in very rare circumstances indeed, except perhaps in the case of the aristocracy where their homes were photographed for magazines such as Country Life, that an item of furniture and a photograph of the item in its original intended setting were kept together and handed down through the generations for us to appreciate 120 plus years later.

The table folds down to a depth of just 7 inches so can be stored against a wall taking up minimal space until it is required. Alternatively, it can be left open and used as a lamp and drinks table. As such it is an extremely versatile table and would be ideal in a small living room. The table is probably made from Padauk (or Padouk), a native Indian hardwood.
