Description

This is a large, fine quality carving of a bear holding a salmon in its jaws made from a single piece of timber (probably cedar) by a Japanese sculptor in the 1970s, whose signature is on the underneath of the bear's front right paw. Stained to create a two-tone effect it has a pale brown coloured snout and back grading to a dark brown on the belly and inside of the legs. The salmon also grades in colour, though in the opposite direction, with the belly much lighter than the top.

This is the 11th bear we have listed from a collection of twelve museum quality Japanese carved wooden bears. The fine detail in the fur, the naturalistic pose and the size of this bear make it quite a statement piece.
