Description

This is a large, fine quality carving of a bear holding a salmon in its jaws made from a single piece of timber (probably cedar) by a Japanese sculptor in the 1970s. Japanese characters have been carved on the underside of the feet - we assume that it includes the sculptor's name, as well as the date 1974. Stained a dark brown, almost black, the bear's fur contrasts with the silver-coloured salmon. The pale natural colour of the wood can be observed on the snout, and on top of the back where handling has resulted in a little wear.

This is the 10th bear we have listed from a collection of twelve museum quality Japanese carved wooden bears, some of which have now sold. The fine detail in the fur, the naturalistic pose and the size of this bear make it quite a statement piece. This is the only bear in the collection to have a silver-coloured fish in its jaws.

Condition report: Excellent condition with some minor surface wear commensurate with age. There are no splits or losses, just some small indentations on the snout.
