Description

This is a delightful early 20th century Japanese carved fruitwood two tier table in the Art Nouveau style retailed by Liberty's of London, circa 1905. The table tops are superbly carved with a bold design of iris flowerheads and leaves. The carving, albeit in lower relief, also extends down each of the legs.

This decorative table would make a useful side, occasional or lamp table.

These tables were carved by Japanese fishermen to meet the demand in the West for Japanese art and design at the turn of the 20th century. They were imported flat-packed to Great Britain, assembled and retailed by Liberty & Co in their London store. On the underneath of the upper and lower table tops is marked the number 121 which was used to assist in the assembly.
