Description

This is a fine carving of a bear with a mahogany coloured finish made from a single piece of timber (probably cedar), Japanese in origin and dating from the mid 20th century. Japanese characters have been carved on the underside of the feet - we assume that the sculptor's name is included. The pale natural colour of the wood can be observed in the mouth and a few areas of surface wear on the body. This bear differs from others in the collection because the fur along the back and outside parts of the legs are shown smooth - perhaps imitating the appearance of a bear after it emerges from water. The quality of the carving, the naturalistic pose and the size of this bear make it quite a statement piece.
