Description

This is an exceptional carving of a bear holding a salmon in its mouth made from a single piece of timber (probably cedar), Japanese in origin and dating from the mid 20th century. The pale natural colour of the wood in the salmon contrasts nicely with the bear itself which is stained a darker colour. The detailing in the bear's fur and the salmon scales are a joy to behold and, taken together with it's imposing size, this bear will not fail to make a memorable and lasting impression.

We have acquired a collection of twelve museum quality Japanese carved wooden bears and this one we consider to be the finest of them all.

Condition report: Excellent condition with some minor wear commensurate with its age. One of the ears has been reattached but the join is almost invisible.
