Description

This is a fine quality figured elm, copper lined hibachi with 4 drawers, Japanese late 19th century. It has the form of a rectangular chest fitted with an open bin and lidded box, below which are 4 short drawers with brass loop handles. The bin is mounted with a removeable cast iron lip. The drawer fronts have shaped frames made of a hardwood with contrasting coloured sapwood (yellow) and heartwood (black). The sides have rectangular-shaped inset handles.

This chest could be fitted with a plate glass top which would make it a small but useful coffee / occasional table with storage as well as making an interesting conversation piece. An alternative use would be as a plant holder for the kitchen.

Condition: This hibachi is in very good antique condition with good colour and patina. The last Japanese owner has made a new inset sheet metal base for the bin as the original copper lining has corroded away. This is just pressed inside so can be removed easily if not required.
