Description

This is an original Japanese woodblock print of a kabuki actor by Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III, 1786-1865), Edo Period c.1852. It depicts the actor, Iwai Kumesaburo III, in the role of Tagoto hime from the play Jiraiya goketsu monogatari. It would originally have been the right sheet of a triptych presenting three actors on a verandah at night with a procession of lanterns visible through the railing.

Dimensions: Height 33 cm by Width 22 cm

Condition: The print is in good condition overall, slightly faded and with two tiny holes about 1mm in diameter. It is attached at the top corners to a thin yellowed card. It was removed from an old frame (probably dating from the early 20th century) and though the frame was discarded due to its poor condition, we have included some pictures for the record.
