Description

This is a superb George II mahogany tea table of unusual design with the back legs at the centre when folded, probably Irish c.1740. Made of the finest Cuban mahogany, the rectangular top opens to reveal a polished interior, above a waved frieze containing one long oak-lined drawer, standing on cabriole legs headed by scrolls, on pad feet.

This is a rare design for a George II tea table, our research has, to date, uncovered only one other, described as Irish, which sold at Christies 'Important English Furniture' sale on 30th November 2000. The design seems to have become more popular in the final quarter of 18th century as examples with straight, square section tapered legs folded into the centre at the back are more common.

This table looks particularly attractive against a wall where the scroll-carved front legs and the unusual arrangement of the back legs can be fully appreciated and admired.

Dimensions: Width 30 1/4 in (77 cm)
Height 29 in (74 cm)
Depth (folded) 15 in (38 cm)
Depth (unfolded) 29 3/4 in (74 cm)

Condition: This tea table is in good antique condition with marks and stains commensurate with age. The top is slightly warped and there is some minor damage in the immediate proximity to one of the brass hinges (internal surface only). The brass drawer handle, though in keeping with its age, is later, and a previous pair of handle holes, though professionally filled, is evident. There is a hairline shrinkage split in one of the back legs but this is shallow in depth and should give no cause for concern. Please contact David if you would like to view additional photographs.
