Description

This is a splendid 17th century six plank oak sword chest / coffer with a charmingly naïve carved front panel combining chip carving and a punched pattern to form three lunettes with stylised flowers filling the spandrels. The oak planks possess a rich colour and patina. The chest is fitted with an antique iron lock plate, split pin hinges and a candle box, though the latter lacks a lid.

There is some evidence of ancient woodworm, particularly at the base of the planks which has led, no doubt, to the floor of the chest having been replaced with a similar thickness oak plank.

Dimensions: 42 1/2 in wide by 14 in deep
