Description

This is a rare mid 17th century elm plank sword chest with a deeply carved front comprising two lunettes, and with a later oak top and legs (probably added in the 19th or early 20th century). The elm front and side boards possess a rich deep colour and patina. It is fitted with a candle box and an antique, possibly, original lock plate, though it lacks a key. There is evidence of ancient woodworm activity and old repairs. The oak top is attractively figured, though there is a spit at one end and a round dark stain from a candle burn.

The carving of the lunettes and in the spandrels on both corners on the front panel is of particular note on this chest, and was clearly executed by an assured, accomplished hand.

Dimensions: 46 1/2 in wide by 16 in deep
