Description

Antique Japanese wood block print - Watching a Cock Fight - from the series 'The Twelve Animals of the Zodiac' by Adachi Ginko (active 1874-97), c.1896

Description: Lively scene of a nobleman in lilac patterned robes refereeing a cockfight, holding a fan as one rooster flies in the air. Four palace guards in white tunics and black court caps kneel nearby, watching the match intently, feathers flying across the ground. A fabric panel provides privacy, and stairs lead to a building at left. Wonderfully detailed.

Artist: Adachi Ginko (1853 - 1902)

Condition: Impression: Very good. Centre fold as published. Hand made paper with horizontal lines 3cm apart and fine vertical lines that show up when held to the light (see last photo with the print held against a window). The paper suggests a relatively early date - possibly from the original publication or shortly thereafter. The print has some creasing at top right and lower right corners. There are no tears.

Size: 35 x 24 cm (paper size).
