Description

This is a good example of an African carved hardwood elephant stool dating from the early 20th Century. It is of traditional form made from a single block of wood with a crescent shaped seat above a carved elephant standing on a flat base.

This stool was made by the Ashanti Tribe in Ghana, West Africa where the elephant represents the power of the king who traditionally would have been the only person allowed to commission such a stool.

Condition: It is in good condition for its age and has a lovely rich patina. There are signs of age and use, a chip on the a top edge and a small split in the base, but nothing which detracts from this fine example. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and is ready for use.
