Description

This is a finely carved Chinese camphor wood chest on stepped bracket feet dating from the mid 20th Century.

The carving on the lid and front is simply stunning - each panel depicts two dragons opposing each other while they twist and contort among clouds. The scenes are framed by borders of clouds. The sides and back are much more simply carved as is typically the case with these chests the sides again depicting dragons writhing among stylised clouds while the back shows a figure, traditional buildings and a bridge.

The lid opens to reveal the pleasant smell of camphor wood. A brass stay keeps the lid upright when it is opened.

Condition: The chest is in excellent condition and possesses a very attractive colour variation with areas in higher relief lighter coloured compared to the background. There are two small shrinkage cracks on top but they are hardly noticeable. The chest has passed through our workshop for a good clean and wax and is ready to make a visual statement in your home as well as providing useful storage space. It could also be used as a coffee table but I would recommend a plate glass top cut to fit.
