Description

This is a finely carved Chinese camphorwood chest / blanket box with a stepped lid dating from circa 1920. It possesses good colour and patina with a lovely tonal variation in which the more raised areas are lighter in colour as the old French polish has worn away from handling and use.

The top and front are deeply carved with scenes depicting figures within classical Chinese landscapes including junks, pagodas, bridges, pine trees and other vegetation and buildings. As is typically the case the sides and back of the chest are more simply carved. The chest stands on stepped bracket feet.

Dimensions: 94cm wide x 46 cm deep x 52 cm high

Condition: The chest has been thoroughly cleaned, waxed and buffed. Overall it is in very good condition. There is a small shrinkage split on the top middle panel which is not open nor obvious, a rather crude but effective repair to one of the back feet which would be hidden once against a wall or bed and a small part of the brass latch is missing - the projecting pins which would have enabled the chest to be locked using a traditional Chinese padlock. None of these minor flaws detract from this beautiful chest.

Delivery: This chest can be delivered to anywhere on Mainland England and most of Wales by our delivery man for £50
