Description

This is a fine quality antique Indian miniature painting of a tiger hunt framed in a red silk mount and impressive gilt frame

A woman and man, both in regal outfits, hunt a tiger, while another man on an elephant hunts deer. The two figures hunting the tiger are believed to represent the Empress Nur Jahan and the Emperor Jahangir. Nur Jahan was the only Empress in the history of the Mughal Empire. Reigning as an equal with her husband Jahangir, she was the only woman to issue executive orders, mint coins, or lead an army — and her tiger-hunting skills were legendary. Though she was one of the most influential leaders in 17th century Asia, for centuries her legacy has been reduced to a love story that ends where her real adventure began – at her marriage to Emperor Jahangir.

The wide gilt frame is elaborately decorated with flower heads and leaves in relief.

The painting is believed to date from the early to mid 20th Century.

Condition: The painting is in good condition apart from a hole on the right margin. The colours are vibrant. The frame is generally in good condition with no loss of the relief decoration but the corners have been a little knocked and retouched.
