Description

Antique Indian Nagina carved ebony toilet box with fold-out mirror. This is a smaller and less well preserved example than the other toilet box we have listed.

Dating from the mid 19th Century this box originates from the northern province of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The box is made from ebony which has been exquisitely carved on the top and all four sides with geometric and floral patterns by Muslim craftsmen.

There is a brass escutcheon, two brass catches and the lid articulates on two pairs of brass hinges.

The original mirror is framed in ebony inlaid with bone and pewter. The inlay work extends to the internal edges of the box.

There would once have been a compartmentalised interior but this is now missing. The floor of the now, single, large compartment is lined in a terracotta-coloured velvet.

There is a working key which may be original to the box (it certainly appears to be of contemporary age).

Size: 10" deep x 8" wide x 3" high (25 x 20.5 x 8 cm)

Condition: The carved top and sides are generally in good condition. There is a little damage to the left side on the corner and a small part of the base has broken away along one of the long sides. At some point in its history these areas have been rather amateurishly repaired with a grey wood filler. The damage has been reflected in the price.
