Description

This is an exceptional primitive hewn chest originating from the Carpathian Mountains of Eastern Europe where it is commonly referred to as a Shepherd's Marriage Chest. It is made of hewn timbers which are pegged and slotted in the traditional fashion. The grain in the wood on the fresher surfaces inside the box, reveals it is made of beech which has taken on a wonderful walnut-coloured patination on the exterior surfaces. Though this type of boarded box has been made over a period ranging hundreds, if not thousands, of years this one is believed to be 17th Century in date.

The front of the chest and the first board on the lid are incised with geometric patterns including a row of concentric circles with flower-like centres. These patterns are believed to be pre-Christian in origin and were used to entrap and ward-off evil spirits. Chests like this one are wonderful examples of folk art.

These boxes would have been passed down from generation to generation in rural communities and after the land, the property and farm animals would have probably been a family's most treasured possession. Rather intriguingly there are a number of names carved into the lid including 'Novak' several times, and 'Kustanozci' among others, which gives us a little glimpse into its unique history.

Condition: The chest is in overall good condition. There is quite a lot of old woodworm and some repairs. The back left foot and the boarded base have been professionally replaced, perhaps in the last 20 years, with oak.

Dimensions: 104 cm wide x 59 cm deep x 77 cm high (41" x 23" x 30 1/5")
