Description

Very decorative Chinese carved elm cabinet from Shanxi in Central China, dating from the second half of 19th Century.

It has a simple plain top above a highly carved front decorated with a mixture of geometric and floral designs. The two drawers bearing bronze handles and clasps are positioned above a fixed three paneled section with a shaped and carved apron beneath. Tapered and shaped spandrels are located to each side both at front and back though only the front pair possess a carved floral design.

Additional storage is located beneath the drawers but it is only accessible when one or both drawers are removed.

This cabinet would look very attractive in a hallway or reception room.

Dimensions: 106 cm width x 45.5 cm depth x 82 cm height ( 41 3/4" wide x 18" deep x 32 1/4" high)

Condition: Excellent. The cabinet has clearly been restored and repolished in China but enough of the original character has been retained. This can be observed on the top, for example, where many of the marks from its history of use have been left.
