Description

Highly detailed and superbly rendered watercolour of a bustling river scene in the southern French city of Avignon. It is in its original gilded frame and was probably acquired in the early to mid 19th Century during a Grand Tour of southern Europe. Though unsigned this was clearly executed by an accomplished professional artist.

Condition: The watercolour is in good condition overall but it does have four foxing spots, the largest being in the sky near top left, the others being less obvious. The gold frame looks to be original, though possibly over-painted, and is in good condition apart from a chip to the plaster bottom centre right. The backing paper has been mostly removed.
