Description

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) genuine woodblock print titled 'The Peak of Satta near Yui", no. 17 from the "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Highway"

Originally published in 1833, this example is a reprint from the woodblock dating from the first half of the 20th Century.

The following description is taken from the British Museum:

Three tiny figures are visible in the top-left corner of this windswept scene. A woodcutter carries a large load, oblivious to the spectacular view, but the other two travellers gaze and gesticulate towards Fuji, perfectly symmetrical and elegantly white on the horizon across Suruga Bay.

A pass was cut high up the steep mountainside at Satta on the orders of the Shogunate in 1655, so that a Korean embassy procession of that year would not have to wait for low tide, as was the case with the coast road used previously.

Unframed. The image of the reverse shows the ink bleeding through. If held up to the light faint horizontal lines 3cm apart can be observed as a watermark (see final photograph).

Size: Paper 40 x 25.5 cm (15 3/4" x 10"). This is the larger more detailed version of this view in comparison to other copies which are of a smaller format.

Condition: The print is in excellent condition. It is a strong impression on thick paper. It will frame very well.
