Description

Finely cast Meiji Period Japanese bronze / spelter figure of a rat catcher.

The figure of the rat catcher has been beautifully cast with plenty of detail from the hair on the rat to the musculature in the bare chested rat catcher, and to the design in the costume which covers him below the waist. There are no signatures or foundry marks.

This looks and feels like patinated bronze but on the underside of the plinth at the base of the feet, where there is wear, silver-coloured metal is exposed which would indicate that the figure has been cast in spelter. The bronzed outer layer is clearly very thick as none of this underlying metal is exposed anywhere else.

The figure stands on a plinth with four feet.
