Description

A wedge-shaped bronze axe head with a cylindrical socket. The socket has a collared base and an upper face of stylized zoomorphic form, possibly representing a moufflon (a regularly used symbol in Luristan art), with jutting muzzle and horns above (represented by a single scroll). The blade is long, with a slightly convex blunt edge.

Luristan: Circa 12th-8th century BC.

Condition: Complete and intact with accretions and patches of ancient corrosion which is stable and not powdery.

Length 14 cms (5.5 ins).

Provenance: Acquired 1980-2015. Ex Abelita family collection.
