Description

Talwin Morris Arts and Crafts Glasgow School Copper Wall Mirror.

A rare and important Talwin Morris Arts and Crafts Glasgow School hammered copper wall mirror decorated with highly stylised peacocks stood on garden plinths.

Synonomous with his much favoured peacock designs similar to his book cover  'The Natural History of Animals' printed by Walter Blackie, the stylised abstract design represents Glasgow School artwork at its pinnacle.

Morris's designs were utilised by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in both the interiors of the Hill House Helensburgh and in Mrs Cranstons Buchanan Street tearooms billiards room.

A beautiful and useful mirror which captures the purity of Glasgow School Arts and Crafts design by one of Scotland's most avant garde illustrators.

Ref: A further example of the mirror is shown with antiques trade gazette literature sold at Bonhams GSA sale in 2003 together with Morris's book cover (see image).

Size: 67cm height x 53cm width.

Date: c. 1900.

Condition:  In superb original condition. The frame importantly retains its rich metallic iridised patina with its original bevelled glass mirror plate with only very slight foxing to the original mirror plate mentioned for accuracy.
