Description

Map of the county of Norfolk by John Speed, using earlier work of Christopher Saxton and engraved by Renold Elstrack in 1623. First issued in 1611 to illustrate a history “Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain”. On the reverse of the map is the original text in English, describing the county and its history and the map is glazed front and back to enable the text to be read. John Speed’s maps were the first to include town plans of the principal towns, here Norwich, and illustrations of battles, cartouches and heraldic symbols, all superbly hand coloured.
There are a few minor creases and blemishes.
Presented in a traditional 1 1/4 inch Hogarth frame with minor wear visible.
The map is overall a good early example with superb colouring.
