Description

Dramatic lithograph numbered 24 of a limited run of 70 by John Piper in 1964. It depicts a carving by Grinling Gibbons dating from 1683, found in a church in Eaton, Rutland. It is numbered and signed by the artist, glazed and in a simple gold frame.
John Piper was born in Epsom Surrey in 1903. He became famous for landscape and architectural paintings of Britain and was an official war artist in World War 2, capturing war damaged buildings most famously Coventry Cathedral immediately after it was bombed. His paintings are in a number of collection including the Tate, and sell for many thousands of pounds. John Piper produced limited edition prints before his death in 1992.
