Description

Very pretty and unusual New Hall porcelain bute cup and saucer, pattern 436, c.1800. Featuring small landscape vignette panels painted "en grisaille" (technically in a very dark sepia) alternating with a geometric design of framing vertical sections in gilt and lilac enamel either side of a lozenge in gilt and lilac with a central flower and the white background being filled with a fine curtain of gilded straight and dotted vertical lines. 5 vignettes to the saucer and 3 to the cup, all differing in subjects including river banks, bridges, and buildings. A gilded foliate band runs under the main deign and both pieces have a flower in the centre. Unmarked, illustrated in "New Hall" by Holgate plate 229.

The saucer measures 13.5cm (5 5/16") wide and 3.2cm (1 1/4") high. The cup measures 8.4cm (3 5/8") rim to rim, 10.5cm (4 1/8") rim to handle and 5.5cm (2 1/4") high. Condition is very good with no damage or restoration. Surface wear is light, there is a bit of wear to the gilded band on the saucer and to the tips of the central flower. There is a hairline in the glaze only underneath the saucer base, it does not come through. The cup has a very little bit of wear to the rim. Minimal surface wear to the main decorative frieze on either piece.
