Description

Superb 19th century comical S&H period Derby figure of Dr. Syntax being chased up a tree by a bull leaving his hat, wig and book lying on the ground in his haste. Lovely detail, even the "book" is illustrated. Puce Stevenson & Hancock mark dates from 1863-1866.

It measures 17cm (6 3/4") high, 11.5cm (4 1/2") wide by 7.5cm (3") deep. Condition is very good. There is a loss to the tip of the bull's right ear and a few usual small losses to the leaves. No other damage and no restoration and very light surface wear, including a tiny paint flake under his arm.
