Description

A pair of elegant brass door stops or door porters by James Cartland and Sons. One polished brass the other patinated brass. Dated c. 1870.

Rare find.  These beautiful Victorian Aesthetic brass door porters were made by James Cartland and Son, Brass Founders of the Great Western Brassfoundry in Birmingham. This company was renowned for its many registered designs, craftsmanship and the quality of its finish.

What is particularly lovely is the contrasting appearance of the pair one in a polished brass and the other with a super antique patina.  There is a small dent to the bell section of the polished stop - please see photos for details.  These are antiques so wear is commensurate with their 150 year age.

Both of the door stops bear the company's impressed mark and number, as shown in the photos. The stops have a shaped handle and a simple shaft with line detail and a bell shaped base, again with central line detail and cast iron loading.
