Description

A super Victorian golden oak campaign extending dining table with three original leaves and a leaf holder. Attributed to Maple & Co of London and dating to c.1890 it features a carved Aesthetic/Arts & Crafts style flower above each ring turned and wrythen reeded leg. With original brass collars and brown pottery castors to the feet the legs were designed to be unscrewed so the table could be more easily transported to the next military campaign.

With an oval top finished with a moulded edge and beaded apron, the Joseph Fitter ‘screw expander’ winding mechanism smoothly extends the table from 5ft to just over 10ft. Any combination of the three leaves can be used in order to seat up to 12 people and any leaves not in use can be stored in the accompanying leaf holder.

The table in good condition with a desirable golden honey oak colour and characteristic medullary rays (tiger grain), mahogany runners to table, the top recently repolished using traditional methods, some minor marks and dark patches consistent with age and use, some fading to the frieze at the ends but will be repolished, the leaves are stamped with consecutive numbers to the side and the winder handle is included. The leaf holder with marks from use, the baize/felt liner is worn but could easily be replaced.
