Description

We are offering this large oil on canvas by the Prussian artist Franz Carl Herpel, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. Unfortunately, the date is indistinct. The painting depicts a warship of the WWI era making smoke, presumably to cover its retreat. The ship is outlined against the setting sun. There are further ships on the horizon.

Franz Carl Herpel 1850-1933, was born in Voronezh in East Prussia on 28th January 1850. He trained under Ludwig Rosenfelder at the Konigsberg (now Kalinningrad) Academy. He began his career as an artist in 1878, when he exhibited at the Berlin Academy where he exhibited until 1890. He also exhibited in Munich, Hamburg, Hanover and Dresden. He was a marine painter and historian and painted sailing ships, warships and seascapes. He was commissioned by the Sultan of Turkey to paint a Turkish torpedo boat. As far as we know, he continued to live in Konigsberg and died there in 1933.

His biographical details are online and in Benezit. His record price for an oil painting in recent years has been £4,447 in 2010 for a 30" x 18" canvas, although many of his painting achieve in excess of £1,000.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 3/8" silver gilt frame and it will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
