Description

We are offering for sale this evocative surrealist oil painting by the artist Riccardo Benedetti, which he has entitled verso 'The Gates' and dated it 1966. It is also initialled and dated on the broken top of the gatepost lying behind the gate. The painting portrays the symbolism of a pair of broken stone gateposts, with one rotting and broken gate, still leaning awkardly from its post. Just through the gate is a skeleton, half buried in the ground, with another skull just showing behind it and more partially buried skulls scattered over the sand haphazardly in the distance. We wonder if it depicts the world after a cataclysmic event, although we do not know the significance, if any, of the sash worn by the skeleton.

We have been unable to discover any biographical information about the artist, but he obviously lived in London, as he has given his address in 1966, as 48 Wavertree Road, London S.W.2, which is in Streatham.

The painting has been newly framed in a 2 1/8" mottled frame that tones with it very well. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
