George Dunkerton Hiscox Watercolour Hungerford
Description
This is a very large watercolour by the artist George Dunkerton Hiscox, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner. It is inscribed Hungerford area on the old backing board. The painting depicts a view of a farm house and outbuildings on the opposite side of a pond, with willow trees in the foreground. It appears to be an autumnal view, as some of the leaves on the bushes to the right are in the reddish colours of autumn and the willows are almost leafless.George Dunkerton Hiscox was born in North Wootton near Wells in Somerset in 1830. He studied at Oxford with a view to entering the Church, but became a student in 1860 at Bristol School of Art and then Bristol Academy of Fine Arts. He taught for 3 years at the School of Art and in 1867 left Bristol for Windsor, where he became an Art Master connected with the Royal Academy South Kensington Schools. He was a landscape artist principally in watercolours, but there are also some oils.
Queen Victoria purchased several of his works and there is one in the National Collection at Banbury Town Hall. He exhibited widely including 19 at the Royal Academy from 1884, 20 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 19 at the Royal Society of British Artists, 8 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, 3 at the Royal Oil Painters Institute and elsewhere in the provinces. His biographical information is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists (Collectors' Club) The Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood and his exhibition history up to 1893 in Graves Dictionary. Unfortunately they all give his dates as 1840-1909, which is inaccurate and has been checked on the Birth and Death Registrations.
There is an excellent detailed biography by a relative available on google, just put in George Dunkerton Hiscox his story and paintings and you will find it.
Interestingly, there is a painting shown on this site which is of the same farmhouse as this one, but painted from a different angle.
He died at 29 Canfield Gardens Hampstead on 21st January 1901.
Due to its size, the painting has not been mounted, but is newly framed in a 2 1/4" ornate gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
