Edwin Buttery 1839-1908 Oil Lake Scene with Cattle
Description
This is a lovely Victorian oil painting on canvas by the artist Edwin Buttery, who has signed the painting to the lower left hand corner. Unfortunately, the painting is untitled, but depicts a lake or loch scene in Wales, or the Lake District. The lake is surrounded by mountains with wooded slopes leading down to the waters, on which there are several yachts. To the left hand bank there is a herdsman, with his small herd of cattle watering in the lake.Edwin Buttery 1839-1908, was born in St. Pancras, London on the 23rd December 1839, the son of Thomas Charles Buttery (1796-1869), who was also an artist. In the 1861 Census, he was living with his parents at 40 Cheyne Walk, Chelsea. He married his wife Mary Ann (nee Blythe) in 1862 and by 1871, they had 2 daughters and 1 son and were living at 167 Hill Street, Newington London. In total they had 10 children, with 8 surviving infancy.
By 1901, having lived in Fulham at various addresses, they were living at 108 Gowan Avenue and he was listed as a picture restorer and artist. He died on 16th October 1908 at 32 Schubert Road, Putney.
He was a professional artist throughout his working life and seemed to only paint landscapes in oils. He did not exhibit in London, so is not listed in the major Directories. His son Horace A. Buttery (1878-1967) did exhibit in the 1920s, after his service in WWI and is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists.
There are auction listing for the artist at the usual sites, including 69 at artprice.com and his work is well regarded.
