Description

We are delighted to offer for sale this 19th Century Ormolu Egyptian Revival Table Lamp, with a brass reeded column and a bespoke shade from the makers who provide the shades for Downton Abbey. The Sphinx had the head and chest of a woman, the body of a lion and the wings of an eagle. The Sphinx is in a seated position upon a circular plinth, on a circular base, with two scroll decorated side supports leading to two circular feet. There are two decorative rectangular feet at the front and back.

The shade has a navy crown, gold sateen body, gold fringe and long tassels and a complementary three tone braid.

The Egyptian Revival period began in the early 19th Century, following Napoleon's conquest of Egypt and the publication of the expedition's work, the Description de l'Egypte from 1809-1826, which inspired everything from sofas with sphinxes for legs to tea sets painted with pyramids.

The lamp has new wiring, plug and safety bulb holder, but, as with all electrical items, it is recommended that it be checked by an electrician before use.
