Description

We are offering this impressionist portrait oil on canvas by the artist Joseph Mortimer Lichtenauer Jr., who has signed the painting Lichtenauer in the lower left hand corner. The portrait depicts a young woman, wearing an embroidered dress in the oriental style, and holding an oriental ornament. The painting is in the impressionist style and executed primarily with palette knife.

Joseph Mortimer Lichtenauer Jr. was born in New York City in 1876. He studied at the Art Students League before moving to Paris and entering the Academie Julian. He later travelled a great deal and also studied in florence. He was a portrait painter, murallist and sculptor.

He painted the ceiling of the Shubert Theatre in New York, created murals for the Adelphi Theatre, the Opera House New York and Washington Irving High School. He also created a series of panels for the Washington Bi-Centennial. He died in Westport Connecticut in 1966.

His works may be found in the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Brooklyn Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His auction results are on the usual sites. He is listed in Who was Who in American Art (Falk 1999)

The painting has been newly framed in a silver gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition: The painting is in good condition consistent with its age. There are two repairs to the canvas and there is some craquelure prevailing, although due to the palette knife technique this is not too obvious. The frame is new.
