Description

We are offering for sale this stunning and dramatic oil painting by the artist Kenneth E. Carter, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and entitled it verso on the edge of the canvas 'Fraulein'. The painting depicts a portrait of a beautiful young woman with very long dark hair, wearing a turquoise straw hat with a ribbon band which hangs down over her shoulder. She has several rings on her right hand, which is holding a gilt chain between thumb and forefinger. She has the typical heavy eye makeup of the 1960s and is silhouetted against a black/ brownish black background.

Kenneth E. Carter was born in Croydon in 1932. He started his career as an artist/illustrator in publishing, one of the books he illustrated being The Observer's book of Railway Locomotives in Britain, published in 1955 by F. Warne. However, in the 1960s, in our opinion the era of this painting, he turned to fine art, specialising in marine subjects in oils and pastels. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Naval Architects in 1979, due to his painting in this field.

We have found 5 paintings of marine subjects by him that have been offered at auction in recent years, so this painting must have been a complete departure in subject matter for him.

The panting has been newly framed in a very complementary 2" black frame with turquoise inset line and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
