Laura L.Howes Watercolour Norwich Cathedral 1911
Description
We are pleased to offer for sale this large and well executed watercolour by the Norwich artist Laura Louise Howes, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner and dated it 1911, thereby making the painting antique. The painting bears the original framers label on the back and another more recent label from a dealer in Norwich, who added a small label which reads as follows 'Norwich Cathedral Church - View of part rear of High Altar from The Jesus Chapel (North) and tombstone of Hannah Walker died 19th July 1780.'The artist has captured the light filling the Nave and the shafts entering the chapel. The Norfolk artist John Sell Cotman painted many watercolours of this Cathedral.
Laura Louise Howes, was a Norwich artist, who was born in 1877 in that city and lived there her whole life until she died, apparently unmarried in 1966. She attended the Norwich School of Art and Design and sat the South Kensington Museum examinations there in 1909, where a piece of her artwork remains in their collection. In the 1901 and 1911 Census, she was listed as an artist. She was a Member of the Woodpeckers Art Club 1903-1905.
Other than this we have not managed to find any further biographical information, but she obviously had talent and a very good hand.
The painting has been nicely mounted with washlines and is framed in a 7/8" gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
Image size 22" x 10 5/8" - 55.8cm x 27cm
Frame size 30" x 18" - 76.2cm x 45.7cm
Medium Watercolours with gum arabic
Condition Very good condition. No fading or foxing and the colours appear true. There is a slight shadow mark along the top edge of the mount, caused by downward light causing the mount to fade slightly apart from where it is in the shadow of the frame. This, in our opinion, does not detract, but could be replaced after purchase. The frame is in good condition, with very minor age related wear.
