Description

We are pleased to offer for sale this lovely tondo oil on paper by the Spanish artist Sebastia Boada, who has signed the painting with his distinctive Boada signature in the lower right of the circle. The painting depicts a woman with draperies, with her hair in a long plait, surrounded by a wreath of autumn leaves wrapped in gold painted ribbon, with two putti or cherubs on each side. At the top of the wreath is a ram's head and two bunches of oak leaves with acorns. There are two sprigs of holly at the bottom of the painting. The painting is very much in the style of Alphonse Mucha and depicts winter.

This is one of a pair of paintings by this artist that we are listing, and they are two of a set of four tondo paintings depicting the four seasons.

On the reverse of the painting we found a card stating that the artist was Carlos Boada, but we believe that this is a pseudonym for Sebastia Boada, as the signature, which had been trademarked, is identical, as is the limited biographical information. We think that the artist, Sebastia Boada, who is known for book and comic illustrations, in a fantasy style, used this pseudonym for a series of tondo paintings, this set of the seasons and some pairs depicting aeroplanes which we have viewed at auction.

Boada was born in Barcelona in the Gracia neighborhood in 1935. Everyone around him noticed his precocious ability in drawing and painting. At the age of 14 he began his studies in the prestigious "Escola d'Art I Oficis Artistics de Barcelona - La Llotja". He graduated to the "Escola Superior de Belles Art de Saint Jordi" in Barcelona and gets a grant from the Direccio General de Belles Arts to "El Paular" in Segovia.

He then followed up with his art studies at the "Ecole des Beaux Arts de Geneve", where he obtained first class honors in 1961, and has since that time won many awards in shows all over western Europe.

His work has been exhibited in Barcelona and Geneva many times where the reception of the critics and the collecting public has been unanimously positive.

He has alternated his professional activity with illustration. His paintings are widely held internationally and his illustrations are well known in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Israel, Turkey. South Africa, Germany, England, Holland, France, Italy, Sweden. Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Finland, Yugoslavia, and of course, Spain.

The trademark of his signature has been cancelled and we wonder whether this is because he is no longer alive. However we cannot confirm this. There are limited edition giclee prints available of some of his paintings, which are selling in excess of $500. There are some auction results available at the usual sites, some under Carlos and some under Sebastia Boada.

The painting is double mounted in two tone and has been newly framed in a 2" rope edged gilt frame. It is ready to hang.
