We are offering for sale this lovely oil painting on canvas by the very well regarded artist Stephen Enoch Hogley, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a Scottish landscape with a herd of shaggy Highland cattle crossing a small stream or burn. From the light and a partically deciphered inscription on the stretcher, it would appear to be the afternoon, a time of day much favoured by the artist.

Stephen Enoch Hogley was born in Almondbury, Yorkshire in 1842. He was apprenticed to the artist and house painter Peace Sykes in Holmfirth and also studied art under Peace Sykes at the Mechanics Institute in Holmfirth, so it would appear that he was involved in painting at both end of the spectrum from an early age. He then studied at the Huddersfield Mechanics Institute in Queen Street and, when it moved to Northumberland Street, he was appointed Assistant Master. He painted landscapes in oils and watercolours, mainly with lakes and hills, often featuring cattle and very often painting in the late afternoon light which he favoured, as in this painting.

He married Mary Jane Farrand (1847-1919) in Almondbury Parish Church on 26th January 1867 and moved to Holmfirst. They had 8 children, four boys and four girls, but sadly three of his daughters died before the age of eleven, only Annie Louisa 1875-1931), who studied art, survived to late middle age. Of his sons, Joseph R. took over the family house painting business and died in 1946. Herbert F. Hogley, born 1884, was killed in WWI in 1918 and is buried in France. Charles Frederick, born 1885, fate unknown and John Bernard who was born in 1873, died in 1927, the same year as his father.

Stephen Enoch Hogley was a Council Member of the Yorkshire Union of Artist from 1895. He exhibited 3 paintings at the Manchester City Art Gallery and 1 at the Royal Society of British Artists. There are three of his paintings in the National Collection, which can be view at BBC - Your Paintings.

The painting has been newly framed in a 3 1/2" gilt frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition Excellent condition. There are no repairs to the canvas, no craquelure or paint loss with slight stretcher marks. The frame is new.
