We are offering for sale this subtly toned oil on canvas coastal landscape by the artist Frank Hider, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. On this occasion the artist has not entitled the painting on the reverse of the canvas. The painting depicts a large sailing boat heeled over at the edge of the waves on a rocky beach below some cliffs. There is someone onboard the boat, talking to a man and woman on the beach below. There are several fishing boats out to sea. Judging by the colouring of the cliffs, it appears that the sun is setting.

This is a quote from Jeremy Wood's book Hidden Talents. 'Frank Hider was a painter in oil and sometimes watercolour of coastal scenes and rural landscapes. This artist was very prolific and his work is frequently seen on the market - the beach scenes in oil being the most common. The oils were often inscribed with the title and location on the reverse. Frank Hider's style and colour are similar to S. Y. Johnson but he usually painted with a broader technique. There are also some similar oils signed George Hider and he may have been related. Frank Hider lived at Forest Gate, Essex for a number of years and died on the 29th November, 1933.'

The painting is framed in a 2 1/8" brushed gilt frame. It is ready to hang.

Condition Excellent condition with no repairs to the canvas, no paint loss or stretcher marks and only a tiny amount of craquelure in the white clouds in the centre. The frame is new.
