We are offering for sale this large impressionist coastal oil painting on canvas by the artist William F. Piper, who has signed the painting W. F. Piper in the lower left hand corner. The painting depicts a coastal landscape of cliffs that we believe to be the cliffs near to Lands End in Cornwall.

William F. Piper was a resident of Newlyn, who was exhibiting in St. Ives in the late 1930s, according to the Cornwall Artists' Index. He specialised in painting coastal scenes in Cornwall and there is one of his paintings in the National Collection at the Royal Cornwall Museum. It is another impressionist oil of the same size as this one and depicts Nanjizal Bay near Lands End. This can be viewed online at BBC - Your Paintings by putting William F. Piper into google. It bears a considerable resemblance to this painting.

Unfortunately, census records that can be viewed cease at 1911, so we can find no further biographical information for this artist, nor can be find any online.

Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at the usual sites, but the record price achieved for one of his Cornish oils of this size, is £760.

The painting is framed in a 1 3/4" gilt and painted frame and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Condition Very good condition. The canvas is clean and taut and there is no craquelure or paint loss and only very slight stretcher marks. The frame is in good condition.
