E. W. Haslehurst RI RBA Watercolour Deer in Summer
Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this large watercolour by the artist ERNEST WILLIAM HASLEHURST, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner with his correct name E. W. Haslehust, as shown. It is a great shame that all the reference books and auction sites refer to this artist as Haslehurst, when his actual name is Haslehust and this has been confirmed by a relative, as well as the artist's own spelling. We have put the incorrect spelling in the title, purely because this is how most people think his name is spelled. We also understand that there is some controversy over his date of birth, as his obituary in The Times gave his year of birth as 1855, not 1866, as the reference books say, but 1866 is correct, confirmed by national records.
The painting depicts a path through woodland, with the trees in full summer leaf, touched by the sun. There are two stags and a hind on the path.
This is one of a pair of watercolours by this artist that we are currently listing.
