Description

We are very pleased to offer this superb watercolour by the Brighton artist Amy Scott, who has signed the painting in the lower left hand corner and entitled it verso 'Jack & Jill' Price £10. 10. 0 (Exhibited in the Royal Academy) by Amy Scott, 14 Preston Street, Brighton, Sussex, as shown.

The painting depicts a cock and hen budgerigar sitting on a perch, with their heads together, the male with his eyes closed and the female with hers open. The detail and execution of the painting is superb.

Amy Scott, 1860-1950, was the last of a family of artists from Brighton. She was the daughter of John Henderson Scott (1829-1886), the granddaughter of William Henry Stothard Scott (1782-1850 and the great granddaughter of Edmund Scott (1758-1915), and she followed in the family tradition. The family had lived at 59 Brunswick Road, Hove, Brighton for 30 years. By 1890, after her father died, Amy was giving art class and had her own studio at 1 Sillwood Terrace, Brighton.

She was a figure, landscape and still life painter in oils and watercolours. She exhibited from 1881-1905, 3 paintings at the Royal Academy including this one, Society of Women Artists (11), Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours (4), Royal Oil Painters Institute (3), Manchester City AG (2), and the Royal Society of British Artists (4).

She has 1 oil painting in the National Collection, a large oil of dead game and a black cat on a table, which is in the Brighton and Hove Museum and Art Gallery, where there is also a portrait of Amy Scott, aged 85, by the artist Harry Robert Mileham.

In 1988 The Brighton & Hove Museum and AG, had an exhibition devoted to the Scott family, including a painting by Amy Scott.

She died in Brighton in 1950 at the age of 90.

The painting is double mounted in two tone to complement and is newly framed in a 2" gilt frame. It will be supplied wired and ready to hang.

Please note that the photo in the frame is too light in colour, but we have left it on to show the frame to best advantage.
