Thomas H.Gibb 1833-1895 Farne Islands
Description
We are delighted to offer for sale this superb landscape by the Northumberland artist Thomas Henry Gibb, who has signed the painting indistinctly in the lower left hand corner and also signed and entitled it verso 'View from the Staple Island near the Pinnacle Cliffs Farne Islands T. H. Gibb, Alnwick 1879'. The Farne Islands are off the coast of Northumberland and are the scene of the rescue of the survivors of the SS Forfarshire in September 1838 by Grace Darling and her father William, who was the lighthouse keeper of the Longstone Lighthouse on the islands. As can be seen from the painting, the islands and particularly the Pinnacle Cliffs, are a haven and nesting site for many species of sea birds, particularly puffins.THOMAS HENRY GIBB, was a Victorian artist, born c. 1833, in Alnwick, Northumberland, where he lived for the majority of his life. He was the father of the other well known artist Henry William Phelan Gibb 1870-1948. In 1881, he was listed in the census as an Artist and Bailiff of the Alnwick County Council.
He exhibited in the 1880s at the Arthur Tooth Gallery, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy. He specialised in paintings of Highland lochs and lakeland scenes, often with cattle and animal paintings, often of dogs.
